Step into a story-like editorial page that explores the use of AI-generated artwork through modified Midjourney assets. These images were created from multiple prompts and iterations, then edited and pieced together using Photoshop.
The map shown in this section is a result of modifying a Mid Journey output based on the prompt "ancient map black ink". After exporting from Mid Journey, the image was brought into Photoshop for adjustments. In addition to a tonal/color shift, Extraneous details and specks have been removed, and the orange graphic lines and points added to the artwork.
Consider combining multiple AI-sourced images into one. In this example, the landscape background and the knight in the foreground are two different images, created from different prompts. They are layered together here to create depth.
Like other tools, AI has its benefits as well as its limitations. Creatives should be open to unexpected imagery while also willing to rework prompts or go multiple versions and iterations – not unlike conventional art creation.
To create the final assets that were incorporated into the page design, I brought the exported images from Mid Journey into Photoshop and enhanced them by cropping, removing backgrounds, deleting unnecessary elements or layering multiple images together. I also made color corrections or contrast adjustments as necessary to fit the overall web design, and in one case drew additional layers by hand.
Outside the framework of Mid Journey, I developed a design system that utilized geometric arches as a graphic concept, along with typography that referenced fiction book covers from the 1960s and 70s. A simple color palette of parchment, bright orange, black and white to tie the various images and graphics together in a bold look.
What's important to note is that all of this still requires thought, experimentation, trial and error to select, edit, and place the images with the bigger picture of the overall design and narrative in mind.
Ultimately, my hope is that AI platforms can be harnessed by artists and creatives for positive outcomes: to bring about more artful experiences that connect with other humans in impactful ways.
